Thin Ice and Slippery Banks are Dangerous

For Immediate Release:  March 19, 2010

FP10-079

Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services reminds the public to be cautious and stay off the South Saskatchewan River and other ponds and lakes throughout the city this spring. The ice on these bodies of water is unstable, and the edges can be slippery.

Residents are urged to keep safety in mind whenever they are near the river. Water pooling on top of the ice or melting at the edges of the river, lake or pond indicates that the ice has started to melt and may not be strong enough to support you.

Remember, in an emergency call 9-1-1.
