Canola biodiesel is an environmentally-friendly, renewable energy source that could also produce cost savings for taxpayers and private businesses.

Phase I and II Testing of Bio-diesel Results

  • A 3% to 10% increase in fuel economy and up to 50% engine wear reduction with a 0.1% to 1% canola bio-diesel in light duty diesel engines.
  • A 0.7% to 2.6% increase in fuel economy and a 30% to 44% decrease in engine wear with varying levels of canola bio-diesel during highway use.
  • Greenhouse gas emission reduction by 7.2% with a 5% canola bio-diesel additive.

Next Steps - The Use of Bio-diesel

    Step 1

    • Implementation of 1% bio-diesel use in the entire Saskatoon Transit fleet
    • Monitoring and evaluating effects of the 1% bio-diesel mix

    Step 2

Phase III testing of 5% bio-diesel with Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD)

Phase III testing will be conducted in the same manner as Phase II with the inclusion of 4 of the newest buses in our fleet with the latest emissions technologies.

      • 2 conventional buses and 2 Diesel Electric Hybrid buses to be used
      • Monitor fuel use, lubricity, emissions - with ULSD and 5% bio-diesel

Saskatoon Transit is taking steps to assist in the City of Saskatoon’s Corporate Energy and Greenhouse Gas Management Plan by implementing new bio-diesel technologies into the fleet. The conversion of the entire Saskatoon Transit fleet to a 1.0% CME blend will result in a cost reduction through reduced fuel consumption and less engine wear. However, of a greater significance is the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. During Phase II of the Bio-diesel project, the 5% blend had reduced GHG emissions. Using a blend throughout the entire fleet will continue to reduce GHG emissions.
