Our mandate is:

To protect, conserve, and improve the environment for the benefit of Saskatonians through regulation, enforcement, policy, planning, education, and programming.

The branch is responsible for environmental programs, recycling, waste bylaw enforcement, garbage collection, landfill operations, departmental labs, and the City of Saskatoon's environmental management system.

Some of the exciting environmental programs include:

• Implementation of the Saskatoon Waste and Recycling Plan
• Implementation of the Energy and Greenhouse Gas Management Plan
• Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days
• Caught in the Act
  

An integrated approach to solid waste management protects human health and safety and ensures that our community remains visually attractive. To these ends, the City of Saskatoon integrates collection, disposal, waste minimization, and enforcement initiatives in the management of residential and commercial solid waste.

The City of Saskatoon is developing an environmental management system (EMS). The three main goals to be achieved through the EMS are to:

• ensure compliance with all relevant legislative and other environmental requirements;
• to reduce the environmental impact caused by the operations of the corporation; and
• to continually improve the environmental performance of the corporation.
