At its August 17 meeting, City Council directed the Administration to make changes to the draft Request For Proposals (RFP)document to allow for proposals to be submitted for collections only, processing only, or combined proposals for both. This will take about 2 months to prepare and a draft RFP should be ready by October.
Collections refers to the manner in which recyclable materials would be gathered from single-family homes.
Processing means the sorting, baling and sale of recyclables back to markets where they will be re-used.
MANDATORY CURBSIDE RECYCLING IN SASKATOON
Updated June 17, 2011
The City of Saskatoon wants to ensure that the citizens know the facts about the decisions made on a mandatory curbside recycling program for our community at the City Council meeting on June 13, 2011.
At this meeting, City Council discussed four recycling reports and voted in favour of establishing a mandatory curbside recycling program for our community. Information about these reports, and details of what will happen next, are provided in theFrequently Asked Questions (PDF).
Our mandate is:
To protect, conserve, and improve the environment for the benefit of Saskatonians through regulation, enforcement, policy, planning, education, and programming.
The branch is responsible for environmental programs, recycling, waste bylaw enforcement, garbage collection, landfill operations, departmental labs, and the City of Saskatoon's environmental management system.
Some of the exciting environmental programs include:
- Implementation of the Saskatoon Waste and Recycling Plan
- Implementation of the Energy and Greenhouse Gas Management Plan
- Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days
- Caught in the Act
An integrated approach to solid waste management protects human health and safety and ensures that our community remains visually attractive. To these ends, the City of Saskatoon integrates collection, disposal, waste minimization, and enforcement initiatives in the management of residential and commercial solid waste.
- Garbage Collection Calendars
- Waste Minimization & Recycling
- Waste Bylaw
- Landfill
The City of Saskatoon is developing an environmental management system (EMS). The three main goals to be achieved through the EMS are to:
- ensure compliance with all relevant legislative and other environmental requirements;
- to reduce the environmental impact caused by the operations of the corporation; and
- to continually improve the environmental performance of the corporation.
