Earth Hour 2011
M A R C H 2 6, 2 0 1 1 - 8 : 3 0 P M
At 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011, the world once again turned off its lights for one hour – Earth Hour – to show symbolic support for action on climate change. In 2011, people in over 131 countries participated. In our community, Saskatoon Light & Power reported just under a 1% change in electrical output during this hour.
The City, in partnership with a number of local businesses and community groups, encouraged residents to get involved and by turning off the lights and unplugging unneccesary appliances for one hour. A special thanks to the Saskatchewan Environmental Society for compiling this list of local participating businesses.
What the City of Saskatoon did for Earth Hour
The Mendel Art Gallery closed early (at 8:00 p.m.) and shut off all lights.
Saskatoon Transit is offered Saskatoon residents free bus and Access Transit service beginning at 6:00 p.m.
All exterior lights and most interior lights at City Hall were turned off.
Civic Leisure Centres remained open but unnecessary lights were turned off.
River Landing's Prairie Wind was darkened.
TCU Place event coordinators asked clients using the facility to participate and reduce lighting whenever possible.
All staff were encouraged to turn off their computers and monitors, whenever possible.
We hope you used Earth Hour to spend time with friends and family or enjoy an unplugged hour of peace in your own company:
