Drive safe. Drive smart. Stop at red lights!
The City of Saskatoon and Saskatoon Police Services implemented red light cameras to improve public safety by reducing red light violations, thereby reducing collisions and injuries.
The digital photo technology of the red light camera provides continuous, objective enforcement, leaving police officers free for other community protection duties.
The system includes Collision Avoidance, which helps reduce the number of right-angle collisions and injuries by extending the red phase for cross traffic.
Certificates of Offence (tickets) and Violation Notices, including photographs of the vehicle running the red light, are mailed to the registered vehicle owner. The fine is $230.
As of October 6, 2008, red light cameras are operational at the following intersections:
- Preston Avenue and 8th Street
- Warman Road and 51st Street
- Avenue C and Circle Drive
Motorists are reminded to stop at all red lights, and come to a complete stop before making a right turn on a red light.

Why install red light cameras?
Red light cameras were installed to discourage motorists from running red lights. Drivers who run red lights run the risk of causing right-angle collisions, which can result in serious injury or death.
Will I get a ticket if the lights turn red while I'm in the intersection?
No. The only way to receive a ticket is if your vehicle enters the intersection on a red light.
Where do I pay for the ticket?
The payment options are listed on the back of the Certificate of Offence as follows:
- If you wish to mail the ticket and payment: Provincial Court, Box 5030, Regina SK S4P 3T9. The ticket must be filled out as described.
- If you wish to pay in person: Court House, 220 - 19th Street East, Saskatoon SK S7K 2H6.

When did they start?
Red Light Cameras were implemented at the intersection of Circle Drive and Avenue C on October 19, 2005. Before implementation, a 30-day phase-in period was in effect at that location from September 19 to October 18, 2005. During that time, Warning Violation Notices were mailed to registered owners of vehicles that ran red lights. No fine was payable during the phase-in period.

Where are the cameras located? And will there be other locations?

As of October 6, 2008, red light cameras are operational at the following intersections:
Preston Avenue and 8th Street
Warman Road and 51st Street
Avenue C and Circle Drive
The City of Saskatoon is always trying to improve safety within the city and one method is the placement of red light cameras.
Are there signs?
Yes. Signs are installed on the approaches to the intersection where red light cameras are in operation.
How does the red light camera system work?
Red light cameras monitor vehicle movements into the intersection and use digital technology to detect and record red light violations 24 hours a day and in all weather conditions. Images are recorded only when a vehicle proceeds into the intersection when the signal is already red.
The digital red light camera system includes a minimum of three cameras on each approach:
 |
The Tracking Camera predicts if a vehicle will run the red light based on time and speed, and triggers the Signal and Enforcement Cameras to record images |
 |
The Signal Camera records images of the vehicle approaching and entering the intersection from behind, with a clear view of the signal ahead |
 |
The Enforcement Camera records close-up photographs of the rear licence plate on the vehicle after it has entered the intersection |

Camera images are sent electronically to a processing centre where specially trained personnel review them. If the processor determines that a violation occurred, the images are reviewed by Saskatoon Police Services. If approved, the Violation Notice and Certificate of Offence (ticket) are mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle that ran the red light.

Do the cameras photograph every vehicle passing through the intersection?
No. The red light cameras target and capture on video only those vehicles entering the intersection after the light has turned red.

The fine is for running a red light at an intersection with red light cameras is $230. A late charge of $40 is added if the fine isn’t paid within 30 days. The Driver's Licence of the registered vehicle owner cannot be renewed until the fine and late payment charges are paid.
Will I receive points on my driving record for a red light camera violation?
