About The Project
The median reconstruction on University Drive between 13th and 15th Streets is a continuation of the work that was completed in 2010 between 15th Street and Clarence Avenue. Once the median has been reconstructed from 13th to 15th Streets and the area has been resurfaced, the median reconstruction project will be complete.
Construction began on August 2, 2011 and will take approximately one month, weather permitting and barring unforeseen circumstances.

Other facts about the project:
Originally, it was proposed that the median be reduced by 0.6 metres on each side, however based on community feedback, it was decided upon a reduction of 0.35 metres on each side. This is the amount that the median was reduced between 15th Street and Clarence Avenue and the amount that the median will be also be reduced between 13th and 15th Streets.
- The work will consist of: removing the old, deteriorated median curb, slightly narrowing the existing median, replacing the median, milling the old asphalt, and resurfacing the road with new Hot Mix Asphalt.
- Once the milling of the road surface is complete, a tack coat will be applied to the surface. This material takes a minimum of twelve hours to set up and contact with it should be avoided. It is difficult to remove from shoes, clothing, skin, carpet, driveways, sidewalks, etc.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this work being done?
The work is required to provide better access for emergency and maintenance vehicles and because the road and curb of the median are in poor condition. Completing this section will not only meet those needs, but match the work that was completed last year from 15th Street to Clarence Avenue and will provide continuity in the neighbourhood.
Will there be major traffic restrictions?
During construction, there will be a full closure of University Drive in both directions from 13th to 15th Street. The intersections will not be closed until resurfacing of the area begins.
What about parking?
Due to the closure of the road, there will be no access to personal driveways or along the street in the construction area. The back lanes will not be affected.
Will water and sewer service be affected?
During the median reconstruction, there are no planned interruptions to water or sewer services.
