Snow and Ice Program

Winter is a fact of life in Saskatoon and after a snowfall, getting around can be a problem. Crews work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to plow and sand roads based on weather conditions, safety considerations, and the priority of the roadway.

Check out Snow & Ice Updates for information on the work underway during and immediately following a major snow event.

Snow What to do? A Guide to the City of Saskatoon Snow & Ice Program

Saskatoon's Snow & Ice Program is comprised of five major components:

  • Sanding/salting:  Applying treated sand or salt to improve traction or to reduce/eliminate ice.
  • Snow plowing:  Pushing snow from the driving lanes to “storage areas” on a street right-of-way, which may be located on the centre median, boulevard or windrow in the parking lane adjacent to the curb.
  • Snow removal: Loading snow in trucks and hauling it to disposal sites.
  • Snow disposal sites (snow dumps):  Providing and maintaining various sites for the storage of snow removed by City crews and private contractors.
  • Snow fencing: Installing removable fencing in specific areas to reduce the drifting of snow from open areas onto streets, sidewalks and lanes.

    Snow and Ice Equipment

In addition to the City’s 16 graders, 7 loaders, 7 high-speed plow trucks, 4 under-slung plow trucks, and 6 sidewalk plows, outside contractors including 6 graders during dayshifts and 15 graders during nightshifts, will assist with snow plowing on the priority street system in a snow event.

If a major snow event occurs, or winds cause drifting on high traffic streets, the City could declare a Snow Route Temporary Parking Ban. If a Snow Route is declared, residents must move cars parked on the snow route, or streets which are identified with “Snow Route – No Parking” signs, so that crews can plow these streets as quickly as possible.

Although crews will not plow residential streets, if deep ruts develop (6 inches or larger), the City will investigate the street and make a decision on whether or not to plow the street.

To help improve public safety and mobility, The Sidewalk Clearing Bylaw requires residential sidewalks to be clear of snow and ice within 48 hours of a snowfall, and sidewalks in certain commercial and suburban areas to be cleared within 24 hours of a snowfall.

The City is also encouraging residents to be “Snow Angels” and help their neighbours keep their sidewalks clear of snow if they are unable to do it themselves.

To receive notifications when a Snow Route is declared, please email: snow.route@saskatoon.ca

To report an unsafe sidewalk due to snow accumulation, please call the Public Works Customer Service line at 975-2491.
