Ongoing Training

Once hired with Saskatoon Fire & Protective Services, firefighters are required to continually upgrade their skills in fire suppression and specialty areas.

In the first year, firefighter certification is required. First year firefighters are teamed with a department veteran in a fundamental skills program, including the Emergency Apparatus/Driver/Operator module. Second year firefighters receive training in Fire Service Instructor level 1 certification (IFSAC accreditation). During the third year, training focuses on building construction and fire service equipment testing procedures. These procedures include ladder inspection and testing, hydrant testing, hose testing, and pump service testing.

Many Saskatoon firefighters are also trained in specialty areas including: Emergency Medical Services, Dangerous Goods and Surface, Water, Dive, Low and High Angle Rope, Confined Space and Trench Rescue.
