Civic government is involved in almost all aspects of our daily lives – from providing public transit, drinking water and electricity, collecting garbage, fixing roads, supporting the arts, educating our children, providing recreation opportunities and protecting our City’s citizens.
Voting is a fundamental right of democracy, and you are encouraged to participate in civic elections. When you vote, you are selecting representatives who will make the laws and policies that determine how our City functions and how we live together.
The City Clerk acts as the Returning Officer for both Municipal and School Board elections, and for voting on any questions or bylaws submitted by these bodies. Since 1970, general elections have been held every three years. The next general election is scheduled for the fall of 2012, after which they will be held every four years.
Elections are also held to fill a Council vacancy or to vote on a bylaw resulting from a petition from electors.
